Whew, yesterday’s installment of SpedSafari Book Club was excellent! There’s lots to say about Designed to Learn by Lindsay Portnoy so I highly recommend following the link to the post and joining the conversation if you haven’t already.
Book club will run all summer long, and I’m pleased to announce the next book we’ll be reading together:
Note: This book club meeting has been rescheduled from summer 2021 to September 2021.
Yes, we will be tackling John Hattie’s work for July! Hattie is basically a household name in the field of education, and for good reason. Let’s see what new insights we can glean from the book, and in the meantime, check out this review from the book’s Amazon page:
“Visible Learning for Teachers is a profoundly important book for teachers, school leaders, parents, and policymakers. John Hattie provides the ‘jury standard’ for educational research. Rather than the typical ‘he said, she said’ controversy, Hattie has amassed the preponderance of the evidence representing the work of thousands of scholars and more than a quarter-billion children. The jury – teachers, leaders, and parents – need not be swayed by the persuasive power of an individual researcher or the flavor-of-the-month initiative. Rather, we can at last make teaching and leadership decisions based upon the best available evidence from multiple sources. As you read these pages, prepare to be challenged. Hattie forced me to reconsider previously strongly held convictions, but he requires that we elevate the preponderance of the evidence over personal belief. Best of all, Hattie shows us how to determine the impact we have right now with our own students. His methods move education from the ‘rear-view mirror’ – what happened in other places with other students – to the ‘windshield’ – what is happening right now with our students. As a result, this book is the most important contribution to educational research and practice in decades.” Douglas Reeves Founder, The Leadership and Learning Center, USA
This is a book that has been on my to-read list for awhile, and I’m eager to dive in! I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with all of you.
When will the book club post go live?
Great question! Mark your calendars, because we will be launching the post about this book on Thursday, September 2, 2021. I’m looking forward to reading what everyone thinks of the book! Watch the Special Ed Safari Facebook page for updates about the book club, the Special Ed Safari store, and more!
