I am super excited to announce a BRAND NEW endeavor here at the Special Ed Safari blog! The 20-21 school year has been unlike anything that came before it, and yes I am including the 19-20 school year in that statement. Each of us has had to adapt to so much change, so much of the unknown, and so much that can’t even yet be predicted. It’s been like being stranded on a desert island!
Keeping the mood light, sure, but the fact of the matter has been that we as educators have had to become experts in a variety of areas that we weren’t expecting a year and a half ago. If you had told me at the start of last school year that I would be supervising virtual, hybrid, then virtual again, then hybrid again services for students with significant special needs in the middle of a global pandemic I would have said you had a sick sense of humor.
In an environment like this one, we have to access professional development any way we can find it. That’s why I’m pleased as punch to announce a brand new endeavor here on the Special Ed Safari blog- the SpedSafari Book Club!
What is it?
Every month, I’ll be reading and posting about a different book related to teaching, learning, leadership, or instruction here on the blog! You’ll get the goods on the book of the month from start to finish, and a chance to find new books to add to your professional library as well as avenues to explore your own professional interests.
Spell it out- what will be covered?
Each monthly post will include the following:
The big picture- what’s it about, and why should we as professional educators care?
The nitty gritty- what rationale for changes in practice are there, in different educational environments?
The takeaway for tomorrow- what knowledge can we apply in our classrooms tomorrow?
Do I have to read the book to participate?
No, but I hope you will! It’s my ultimate goal that these posts motivate folks to read some of the great works of professional writing that are out there for educators, and hopefully to discuss something new.
Sounds good! What are we reading first!
I’m glad you asked! The inaugural book in the SpedSafari book club is none other than…
The Four O’Clock Faculty by Rich Czyz! What better way to kick start a series all about professional development on our own terms than with the book which argues, hey, why don’t we start embracing professional development on our own terms? Seems like a good deal to me.
When does the party get started? The post on the book will go live one week from today, and will include the juicy good stuff talked about earlier. Now is your chance to get a copy, read the book, and be ready for some excellent discussion. I can’t wait! The next book will be announced the following Friday, and a month from now we’ll repeat the cycle all over again! It’s a great way to finally make a dent in all the books you’ve promised yourself (or your department chair, or your principal, or your professor…) that you’ll read.
SO! To sum it up, get to reading The Four O’Clock Faculty by Rich Czyz and get ready to discuss! Come on back here on Thursday, May 6th for the full discussion!
On Friday, May 7th, the next book in our book club will be announced here and on the Special Ed Safari Facebook page. Do you have a go-to book you recommend on the subjects of teaching, learning, leadership or instruction? Post it in the comments below!
See you next week for our first book club meeting!
