Get Set for Summer Learning: Supporting Differentiation

Updated: Sep 2, 2023

This is a really exciting time.  For many students and teachers, the year has drawn to a close, and for others the end of the year will be here very soon.  I’m in the second camp, and we are definitely scheduling all that we’ve achieved during what has been a very interesting year to say the least.

But, we’ve also got our eye on the next big project on the horizon.

Yup. Extended School Year (ESY) and summer programming.

Planning for summer programming is no mean feat.  Teachers may or may not have familiar students, and they may or may not be in their regular buildings, with their regular teams, or teaching things they’re familiar or comfortable with.  Add in that teachers and support staff are coming off of a really tiring year and you’ve got a situation where some help is needed.

That’s where Special Ed Safari comes in!  Special Ed Safari specializes in accessible, differentiated resources surrounding age appropriate themes and topics to support teachers in providing high quality instruction!  That’s especially true for the summer months, when it’s a great time to try something new!

Read on for great ideas that are ready to implement for summer instruction today!

The Summer Fun Writing Prompts and Journal is a great way to keep students writing over the summer, and is available in both print and digital formats.  30 different prompts provide great starts to writing pieces for students all summer long!

Task cards are a great way to practice functional skills in a fun format!  This twelve task Next Dollar Task Card Bundle provides multiple presentations of a functional life skill that can be used in many different ways to keep the practice fresh and exciting while still relevant for your students.  Check out my blog post on how to use task cards in new ways for more ideas to enhance your summer instruction!

Summer is a great time to introduce students to a travel or location themed unit, and here is one that’s ready to go while focusing on critical literacy skills of identifying the central idea and supporting detail of a nonfiction text.  With an age-appropriate theme and real photos, this National Park Reading Passages Bundle will get your summer literacy instruction off to a great start!

Here’s hoping your summer is off to a great start, or that your school year ends well!  Regardless of which boat you’re in, be sure to check back here on the Special Ed Safari blog on Tuesday, June 15th, 2021 for a special summer series announcement!  You won’t want to miss this!
